To say video games are generally male-centric seems obvious. For Lexi Peterson, age 14, this fact was very close to home. Being a hockey player both in and outside the video game world, Lexi managed to do something few people can claim. She changed the face (literally) of EA Sports NHL 12.
This teenage hockey enthusiast from Buffalo, N.Y. often plays EA Sports popular NHL titles with her older brother. Where as for years he has been able to create a custom character to represent himself in the game, Lexi has never been able to do the same. Limited to creating a male character with long hair, Lexi decided to follow her father's advice and write EA Sports. Her letter was recieved by Peter Moore, COO of EA Sports. Initially Lexi was met with disapointment. Having to renogotiate with the NHL was only one of several reasons she was given as to why adding custom females characters could not be done.
Our story doesn't end there however. Mr. Moore forwarded the letter to David Littman, executive producer of the game. Touched by her simple desire to feel more a part of the game, he personally found money for last minute development and got the all the legal paperwork rolling. Not long after, Lexi's dream had finally come true, but Mr. Littman wasn't done yet. Lexi was asked to provide photos to make the default custom female character none other than her own likeness.
"My first thought was that we want to make people happy with our game, and here's one girl who wasn't happy playing our game" Mr. Littman told Greg Wyshynski from Yahoo's sports blog.
EA Sports' NHL 12 was released Tuesday, September 13th.
