• Epic Games Opens Baltimore Studio to Employ Ex-"Amalur" Devs

This is some really cool news to kick off E3 week. Everyone in the industry felt pretty bad about Big Huge Games, the developers behind Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning all getting their pink slips as 38 Studios was shut down last month. Today, to the rescue comes Epic Games, the studio behind the massively successful Gears of War franchise.

Dr. Michael Capps, President of Epic, explained the situation in a blog post:

On Wednesday, the ex-BHG leadership team contacted us. They wanted to start a new company and keep together some of the key talent displaced by the layoff, and hoped that they could use an Epic IP as a starting point for a new game. We loved that they all wanted to keep working together, but it was pretty clear they’d have trouble building a demo and securing funding before their personal savings ran out.

In one of life’s coincidences, Epic’s directors had spent the morning discussing how we’d love to build even more successful projects with our growing team, but that we’d need a dramatic infusion of top talent to do so. Which, we all knew, was impossible.

So now we’re planning to start an impossible studio in Baltimore.
Kudos to Epic Games for being a white light in this dark world of unfairness and unemployment.

Epic Games, you continue to prove why you are one of the best developers in the world. Good on you for hiring talented developers.

to be fair the outreach to 38 and BHG was incredible. nearly every game development company reached out with job openings. last i heard over 270 job openings were listed in a google document that was distributed to each ex-employee of 38 and BHG. brings comfort i think, that the gaming community is like family when it comes to tough times.
