Microsoft is releasing Kinect for businesses to work on applications that utilize the Kinect's functionality. The Kinect for Windows commercial program was launched today and already has United Health Group, American Express, Mattel, Telefonica, and Toyota aboard creating their own applications.
The press release says over 300 companies from more than 25 countries are utilizing the Kinect software and hardware to transform the customer experience and their industries.
To encourage small businesses to jump on board and see what they can do for their company using Kincect for Windows, Microsoft has teamed up with Tech Stars to offer a Kinect Accelerator program. This program is intended to offer entrepreneurs, engineers, and innovators a chance to create their own applications in a competition that will run for three months.
Craig Eisler, general manager for Kinect for Windows stated:
It’s been just over a year since we launched Kinect for Xbox 360, and we’re only starting to scratch the surface of what’s possible with Kinect. By offering hardware and software that’s designed specifically for Windows applications, we hope to inspire visionaries around the world to create transformative breakthroughs with Kinect—taking its gesture and voice capabilities beyond the living room into other industries such as education, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail.
