Being a mother of three, I understand the fight against games that kids should not have in front of them. However, that's just the point, some parents are not monitoring the games that their kids are playing, as long as it plays the part as a babysitter. Games should not be a child's sitter, but rather a form of entertainment.
Now, let's talk about the older generation of children for a minute. I have witnessed, way too many times than I'd like to admit, where a parent is asking their kid what game that they want and the kid picks up a very mature title. I would usually bring it upon myself to educate the parent on the game, but I gave up on that once I realized that parents just don't care what their kids are playing. Mature games are intended to entertain the adults, and nothing more.
In a recent post from nintendofansonline, Shigeru Miyamoto was quoted saying:
Sometimes I get worried about the continued reliance on making games that are so centered around guns, and that there are so many of these games. I have a hard time imagining – particularly for young generations of gamers – how they sit down and play and interact with that.
Previous forms of media, like books, made it easy for parents to know and understand what they’re buying for their children. With the transition into digital mediums it becomes more difficult for parents to have a full grasp of what’s going on. From a game developer’s standpoint it’s important to take that into account.
