In a trend that's getting more and more disturbing as time goes on, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City developers Slant Six Games have laid off 'more than a quarter' of their workforce. The news was broken yesterday to GameSpot that a large chunk of its 96-person team based in Vancouver were given two options: to take a severance package or accept a temporary layoff and collect employment insurance while the company searches for new projects.
RE: ORC sold well, according to the game's publisher Capcom, but the same cannot be said as far as reviews are concerned. The game has a 52 rating on MetaCritic, with 24 of 56 reviews in the 'negative' column. It scored a 6.0/10 from us at 8bitfix.
I personally enjoyed RE:ORC for what it was, and I think that Slant Six has a lot of talent. I still feel like they made the best SOCOM game in years with 2008's SOCOM: Confrontation for the PS3. Once the myriad of launch issues were hammered out, that game was great. I still hold out hope that Sony will let them revive the franchise as the original developers, Zipper Interactive, were shut down completely.
I wish Slant Six the best of luck and I hope to see a new project from them soon.
