How to make Perler Bead video game sprites

For those of you who have anticipated making these, but didn't know how to get started, I'm here to tell you how. This is a tutorial on Perler Bead video game sprites, like those that you've seen on our Christmas trees.

First you need to choose the sprites you want to recreate. Google your favorite video game characters and find sprites of them.

Next, here are the materials you will need:

    • Perler Beads (It's best to pick up a bucket of basic colors for your first time purchasing. They run about $10 -$12 and you can print up a 40% off coupon for the craft stores and get a better deal.)
    • Ironing Sheets (if your bucket doesn't come with any. A pack is only about $2.)
    • Perler tweezers (optional, but they are handy and make it easier. Those are only about $2 also.)
    • Perler Peg Boards (it's best to get the basic large square peg boards. These can be found at craft stores in sets of 2 for about $3.99. You may want to get 2 sets, to start with. NOTE- larger sprites require more peg boards.)
    • An iron

Here are the steps to recreating that 8bit (or 16-bit...or higher) image in Perler form:

    1. Each bit, or square, equals one bead. So match up the image onto your peg board. It is easier to count out how many beads you will need total, vertically and horizontally. This will help you with centering the image on the peg boards, also eliminating the need for excess boards. Continue to add the beads to the peg board until you have completed the image.
    2. Heat up your iron. I set mine to a cotton setting. You don't want it at its hottest, but the setting below should work fine.
    3. Open up and place the ironing sheet on top of your Perler project. Be careful that you do not shift or bump any beads in the process! Make sure all the beads are covered. DO NOT PLACE THE IRON DIRECTLY ON TOP OF THE BEADS.
    4. Iron the beads. You will need to make sure that all of the beads are ironed. This serves as the glue that bonds them. The heat will melt them together. Some people like ironing the beads until you can no longer see the space in the center of each bead. I iron them enough to where I know they are connected and will not fall off. This will take some practice to know just how much you iron them. Remember you can lift the ironing sheet to see if you need to concentrate on a particular area a bit more.
    5. Flip the Perler creation over, onto a flat surface, place the sheet on it again and iron the other side as well.
    6. Once you are done, place a heavy object, such as a book, on top to keep the creation flat while it cools.
    7. Let it cool for a few minutes (about 3-5) and you're done!

Now get started and share those creations on this post for all to see!

Taun, you should host an 8bit craftfest one day, or something, for those of us who are crafting noobs. I'd love to have my own little gaming memorabilia. Because you're quite talented!

OK, I finally got a pic of my completed Kirby's Epic Yarn Christmas stocking! With some dedication and a perfectionist by my side, it came out great!

Awesome stuff Taun! I'm sort of into craft n stuff myself. Not a whole lot, but I love your stuff to death!

The only game related arts n craft endeavor I've done which comes to mind involves a rock band guitar! "Because despite your violent behaviour, the only thing you've managed to break so far is my heart"

Thanks so much, Errr! That is super cool! We did a little something to ours, too. But it wasn't game related. Gusto put the Lion of Judah on ours. Then I bought the Lion of Judah guitar strap. I ran into it while we were strolling around Fryes in Austin with Rei. =D

Not too sure what we could've done that was game related... Yours fits the bill!

I'd love to see someone make this. I wouldn't mind having one myself.

My friend taught me how to crochet. This a craft that I actually enjoy a lot. I do cross-stitching, but that bores me after a while

I need to get me some card stock paper to make one of these. You can use regular paper, but it will be so flimsy. Click to enlarge the images.
